The Georgia Transportation Institute (GTI) was established in 1998 to coordinate and act as a focal point for transportation research in the state of Georgia.

Researchers affiliated with GTI member Universities are active in research on a broad range of topics including policy and planning, environmental issues, transportation technology, transportation infrastructure, and traffic operations.

GTI members regularly perform research activities for and on behalf of GDOT to help GDOT to explore innovative, cost-effective approaches and solutions to more effectively deliver its mission and operations.

More than 40 researchers are active in research on topics including policy and planning, environmental issues, transportation technology, transportation infrastructure, and traffic operations. GTI-UTC, in cooperation with GDOT, sponsors annual research conferences to discuss research needs.

The Georgia DOT Research, Development, and Technology Transfer (RD&T) Program provides matching funding to GTI consortium members for their participation in federally-funded University Transportation Centers.

Annually, GDOT solicits research needs statements from members of the GTI Community to be considered for research project contracts. Top ideas are prioritized based on Department need and funding costs. The portal for the FY 2027 solicitation will be open from August 17th – September 25th, 2026.
