Construction Travel Impacts
Construction staging will include some intermittent lane closures, lane shifts and traffic pacing on I-285, at the interchange entrance and exit ramps and on Camp Creek Parkway. The scheduled lane closures will keep workers and drivers safe as construction activities continue.
Message boards and signage will alert drivers of the closures and traffic impacts in advance of the project area. Motorists traveling in the area are reminded to reduce their speeds in the work zone.
Traffic analysis has shown increasing numbers of crashes and routine traffic congestion at the I-285/Camp Creek Parkway interchange. Once completed the I-285 at Camp Creek DDI will address those issues by improving traffic flow and mobility, reducing traffic accidents and providing a distinctive gateway for the area.
Improvements for this interchange were identified and evaluated by GDOT’s Office of Traffic Operations as well as the Office of Planning through its Metro Atlanta Operational Planning Study, which found that both of the I-285 off-ramps to SR 6 tend to back up onto I-285 during the peak periods. In addition, the DDI was designed with truck and tractor-trailer traffic in mind; just as vehicular traffic, trucks will move through the DDI more efficiently. Dedicated pedestrian walkways will provide safer access through the DDI.
