Bridges

The Office of Bridge Design and Maintenance oversees the structural design of highway bridges, culverts, and retaining walls, as well as the hydraulic design of bridge structures. This includes supporting local bridges, which are managed by counties. The office also evaluates damage to bridges, conducts emergency repairs and replacements, and performs reviews for permits.

Check Your HEIGHT, Know It’s RIGHT

Bridge Strike Awareness Campaign

Many roads in Georgia have low overhead bridges. Drivers have a responsibility to make sure their vehicle is not too tall to pass safely beneath overpasses on state and local roads. Collisions with low-clearance obstacles can damage vehicles, infrastructure, and cause major traffic delays. If you're behind the wheel of a commercial and rental truck, please ensure compliance with posted bridge clearance signs when on the road.

Helpful Tips

Know your vehicle height and be observant for signs that warn of upcoming low bridges.

Take note of vehicle heights posted on bridges as you approach them, and do not proceed if your vehicle exceeds these limits.

Comply with signs that warn where trucks are not allowed on a route. Pay attention when traveling on parkways as vertical clearances could be as low as 6’11”.

Do not rely solely on your GPS routing. Professional drivers should use commercial GPS units that specifically include bridge height information.
