Variable Speed Limits (VSL)

Slow Down to Get There Faster

​Beginning in September 2014, Georgia DOT will implement Variable Speed Limits (VSL) on the Top End of I-285.  VSL will help relieve congestion and improve safety on that corridor.

Crowded roads in Hinesville and Tifton will be widened and a busy interchange in Griffin rebuilt as components of more than $55 million in new transportation infrastructure improvements were approved by Georgia DOT. Since January, Georgia DOT has awarded 65 major construction contracts across the state valued at more than $300 million.

 Teens in the Driver Seat


Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS) is a FREE peer-to-peer safety program designed to reduce the frequency of fatal crashes involving teen drivers by targeting young people behind the wheel. Georgia DOT and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) have partnered together and developed safety messages surrounding the five major causes of accidents:

  • Driving at Night
  • Speeding and Racing
  • Distractions
  • Seat Belt Usage
  • Drugs and Alcohol

Drive Smart Video Series

Watch Georgia DOT's series of educational videos about the impact of distracting driving. This video series was released in support of the Federal Highway Administration's Toward Zero Deaths initiative to reduce fatalities on the roadways .
