Connect Central Georgia Study

Overview

The Office of Planning has initiated the Connect Central Georgia Study to assess safety, mobility, and connectivity across one of the most important transportation links in the state. The 31-County study area, which spans the middle of Georgia from the Alabama border to the South Carolina border, includes four key cities – Columbus, Macon, Warner Robins, and Augusta. The area is home to three military bases (Fort Benning in Columbus, Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, and Fort Gordon in Augusta) as well as significant natural and agricultural resources that drive economic development in the state.

• Purpose

  Building upon recommendations from Georgia’s Statewide Strategic Plan, also known as Investing in Tomorrow’s Transportation Today (IT3), this study will be the first holistic look at traffic and goods movement across this portion of the state and will build off of the accomplishments and lessons learned from previous transportation studies. The study includes thorough analysis of operational and capacity needs to improve safety, freight movements, person mobility, and connectivity across Central Georgia through the year 2035.

  GDOT is working closely with transportation partners, local stakeholders, and the public to identify issues and opportunities, define study goals and objectives, and identify potential improvements consistent with goals and objectives through technical analysis. Study efforts kicked off in the summer of 2011 and will continue through the summer of 2012.

  • Improve safety, accessibility, and mobility options available to people and for freight.
  • Enhance the inter-regional connectivity of the transportation system for people and freight.
  • Promote efficient system management and operation.
  • Emphasize the preservation of the existing transportation system.
  • Protect quality of life, and promote consistency between transportation improvements and state and local planned growth and economic development patterns.

The Connect Central Georgia Online Survey closed January 31st and the study team has completed tabulating the results for consideration in the study process. Stakeholder Meetings

As part of the study process a Stakeholder Advisory Group (SAG) has been organized to provide guidance and feedback to the study team. The SAG is composed of local elected officials and staff from Regional Commissions (RC), Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO), counties and cities, and military installations within the study area, as well as some of the area’s key industry representatives.

Five stakeholder meetings were planned over the course of the study at key milestones in the process. The final meeting is scheduled for September 10, 2012.
