Archaeology History

Avondale Burial Place

Through the help of area residents in Bibb County, Georgia DOT identified the existence and location of an abandoned African American cemetery.  Georgia DOT began to perform historical research in an attempt to confirm that a cemetery in fact existed and to gain clues about the identities of the individuals buried within.  This project also includes the recovery and relocation of the burials to a new location.  The cemetery was named the Avondale Burial Place due to its proximity to the nearby community of Avondale.  View Avondale Burial Place website
