Litter Prevention

The Georgia DOT is tasked with litter pick-up on Georgia's interstates and the state highway system by constitutional law. About 150 DOT routine maintenance crews, 49 prison crews, 3,000 weekend probationers and around 400 volunteer Adopt-A-Highway organizations regularly pick up litter on our system.

Litter prevention is a matter of civic pride. It's everyone's problem. By working to increase Georgia civic pride, The Georgia DOT hopes to help make littering on Georgia roads taboo.

The Georgia DOT is currently involved in an inter-agency effort to reduce litter statewide. This effort is a partnership with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and Keep Georgia Beautiful to research all issues relating to littering behavior and litter prevention, including:

  • Research of the circumstances under which littering occurs
  • Review of other states' successful initiatives
  • Development of a three-pronged public awareness effort directed at children, teens and adults designed to engender civic pride, individual responsibility and to reduce littering behavior
  • Review of the range of litter-related legislation and enforcement efforts statewide
  • Outreach to the leadership of other state and local agencies and organizations with responsibility and vested interests in the litter problem.

Litter Prevention Pilot Program

In 2001 and 2002, the Georgia DOT launched a Litter Prevention Pilot Program in the city of Savannah and in Chatham and Bryan counties. This pilot program allowed the Georgia DOT to "test the water" on the overall program goals without committing millions of taxpayer dollars to a long-term preventative public awareness campaign.
