US 19/SR 3 Resurfacing Project
Georgia DOT’s first highway ARRA project on the Road to Recovery is a $940,841.23 resurfacing project in the metro Atlanta area. Let in May 2009, prime contractor CW Matthews Contracting Company was the low bidder and was awarded the contract to mill, inlay and resurface 4.25 miles of US 19/State Route 3 from I-285 to Cleveland Avenue, spanning an economically disadvantaged area (EDA) in Clayton and Fulton counties. CW Matthews has identified three DBE sub-contractors on this project: B & J Paving Inc.; Complete Hauling, Inc.; and Tucker Trucking Enterprises, Inc.
Ray Rodriguez, vice president for human resources at Matthews stated: “This stimulus project will bring much-needed work to our 25-member paving crew.” In addition, it’s anticipated that the DBE firms will hire and/or retain several workers for this project. Mark Mattox of B & J said, “Our company has hired three additional workers on this project who had been laid off from their previous companies.”
Crews began work on this project July 6, 2009; due to the high traffic volumes on this corridor, the paving work will be performed at night. Weather permitting, this project is scheduled to be completed by fall 2009.
