SR96 Widening - Houston/Peach Counties

Project Overview

The State Route (SR) 96 widening project will improve the capacity, operational efficiency, and continuity of the SR 96 corridor between Interstate 75 and Old Hawkinsville Road/Thompson Mill Road, as growth on the corridor continues.

The proposed project begins 0.4 miles east of I-75 and ends 0.28 miles east of Old Hawkinsville Road/Thompson Mill Road. This project would widen the existing two-lane rural road to a four-lane urban facility separated at different locations by either a 44-foot grassed median or a 24-foot raised median. The urban section will also include 4-foot bike lanes, curb and gutter, and five-foot wide sidewalks along both sides of SR 96 for the entire length of the project.

Impact on Commercial District

To avoid impacts to the downtown Bonaire commercial district, a new alignment is proposed approximately 1400 feet north of the existing at-grade intersection of SR 96 and SR 247/US 129. The proposed SR 96 crossing of the Norfolk Southern Railroad and SR 247/US 129 would be on a bridge. Due to these grade separations, access between relocated SR 96 and SR 247/US 129 would be provided via a partial cloverleaf interchange. The relocated SR 96 alignment will tie back in with existing SR 96 just east of its existing intersection with Old Hawkinsville Road/Thompson Mill Road.
