Georgia DOT is receiving grant funding for the West Point 85 Interchange project through the U.S. DOT?s Highways for LIFE program. The Highways for LIFE program emphasizes the importance of minimizing construction time and delays experienced by the traveling public and improving work zone safety.
The project team is employing several tools, techniques, and technologies to reduce the impacts experienced by the traveling public as a result of construction activities and to meet the objectives established by the Highways for LIFE program, including:
- Using the Design-Build Process: Using the design/build process will enable Georgia DOT to decrease construction time in order to meet the aggressive schedule of delivering a fully operational transportation facility by December 2008.
- Employing Innovative Solutions for Bridge Construction: The project team will use pre-cast concrete elements for the bridge at the new interchange of Kia Boulevard over I-85, which will dramatically reduce the amount of time needed for construction. Reduced construction time translates into reduced traffic impacts for travelers through the corridor. Other advantages to employing this technology for bridge construction include improving construction work zone safety and minimizing impacts of construction on the environment.
- Conducting a Public Outreach Campaign: The project team will use intelligent traffic system technologies in and around work zones to warn the public of traffic delays. Additional means of communicating construction activities to the public include a post card campaign, project hotline, and project web site.
- Increasing Work Zone Safety: Some construction activities will be conducted at night to minimize traffic delays and reduce exposure of workers and motorists.
