14th Street Bridge
The Georgia Department of Transportation has begun the 14th Street Bridge Improvement Project in Fulton County. As of June 2007, utility relocation is underway. This project is designed to help relieve congestion and improve safety at the 14th Street interchange.
The scheduled project completion date is May 31, 2010.
The improvements will feature two new exit ramps: southbound to 10th Street and northbound to 17th Street. These additions will help to relieve congestion on the existing streets. The project also includes pedestrian safety improvements along 14th Street to include 15-foot wide sidewalks on the bridge and roadway approaches.

Closures and Traffic Shifts
Beginning February 14th, traffic on 14th Street between Crescent Avenue and Williams Street will be reduced to one westbound lane. The traffic shift and lane closures are expected to be in place for about six months. A temporary alternate will be available for cars, motorcycles and light trucks only.
The 14th Street bridge is closed between Fowler and Williams Street. The bridge will reopen by Winter 2009. View more information about the bridge closure (.pdf 25K).
The following closures are already in place:
- Williams Street reduced to one lane.
- Techwood Drive between 16th and 10th streets. Will reopen in Summer 2009.
- I-85 southbound ramp to 14th and 10th streets. Motorists should exit I-85 at 17th Street (Exit 84) and utilize the 17th Street bridge to Spring Street to access Midtown and locations west of I-75/85.
- I-75 southbound ramp to 14th and 10th streets from Exit 250. Motorists should exit I-75 at Northside Drive (Exit 252) and turn left onto 10th Street.
Special note: 16th Street will remain open to traffic. Motorists will not be permitted to park along 16th Street during this phase.
Impact on Travel
- Traffic on the downtown connector will be greatly impacted. Delays are to be expected. At times, traffic will be paced and lanes shifted.
- The 14th Street bridge will close in late mid Spring 2008.
- Northbound traffic will be detoured to the 10th Street bridge and southbound traffic to the 17th Street bridge once the 14th Street Bridge closes.
- Lane closures will not take place during inclement weather or on designated holiday weekends.
Travel Information
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to bad weather. Callers can also reach live operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org. Georgia 511 – we’ll get you there.
Motorists are also advised to carpool, vanpool or take mass transit. Use of these travel alternatives helps reduce the traffic congestion that occurs during peak commute times and in construction work zones, and helps the Atlanta metro region have a cleaner environment!
