Commuter Choice and Value Pricing Insurance Incentive Program (RP 2019)

The purpose of this study is to confirm that drivers will modify their driving patterns in order to reduce their vehicle insurance rates. This study is to examine the differences in household commute patterns for 275 monitored households in metro Atlanta, including approximately 500 vehicles, as a function of the difference in vehicle insurance costs and transportation incentives afforded to households.

Researchers are to monitor:

(1) The driving patterns of household participants with no pricing treatments,

(2) Changes in driving patterns to determine whether participants modify their travel behavior as a function of the pricing incentive, and

(3) The marginal effect on travel behavior associated with a pay-as-you-drive premium pricing structure, which expands the mileage exposure-based premium and incorporates time of day, congestion levels, speed, acceleration, and other risk factors associated with driver behavior.
