About Georgia DOT

The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is the transportation engineering agency for the state. Chartered in 1917, the department has grown into a nationally recognized leader for quality management and innovative improvements in the state's transportation system. The State Transportation Board and the 6,000 Georgia DOT employees remain committed to providing the residents of Georgia with the most efficient, well-managed transportation system in the nation. That transportation system now encompasses over 112,000 miles of public roads, 5,000 miles of railroad, and over 400 public and private airports. The department also serves the traveling public through 12 urban transportation systems and 100 rural transit systems.

The core expertise underpinning most Georgia DOT services is civil engineering. Civil engineering is practiced in numerous specialty areas within the Georgia DOT including transportation planning; environment/location studies; road, urban and bridge design; construction-materials research; geotechnical studies; traffic management and operations; traffic safety and intersection design; road/bridge construction inspection; and maintenance. Agency engineers work as individuals and as team members on a variety of projects. They also coordinate work across specialty areas and organizational lines in order to produce a quality job outcome.

Georgia DOT provides an excellent opportunity for civil engineers and civil engineering technologists to learn the different aspects of transportation engineering and to see how "the big picture" fits together.
Engineers, workers, and supporting staff alike are committed to quality and pride in performance. This commitment contributes to Georgia DOT's being a great place to grow in your profession, work with talented and well-respected colleagues, and contribute to a finished product that will benefit travelers in Georgia for years to come!
