Internship Program

Students in good standing at an accredited college or university and who want to work in a capacity directly related to their academic major may apply for a Georgia DOT internship. An internship usually is a formal, supervised component of an academic program; however, this is not an absolute requirement for internship participation. Students in civil engineering or approved pre-engineering academic programs apply directly to the Georgia DOT Recruitment Section by following the directions provided at the bottom of the page.

Description of Duties

Under direct supervision, students in a professional field of study will perform various duties that are directly related to their academic major. Engineering interns work in an area of interest that may include any of the transportation engineering specialties: road/bridge construction inspection; road, bridge or urban design; environment/location studies; materials testing and research; traffic operations; traffic safety studies and intersection design; and transportation planning. Engineering interns are placed in positions that best match their interests and coursework backgrounds.

The duration of an internship is usually one academic term (approximately 10 weeks); an internship may be extended through the next term if the hiring Office or District gives express permission. Interns are paid on an hourly basis and may be in full-time or part-time work status.

Minimum Requirements

  • Interested students must meet the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student in good academic standing at an ABET-accredited* Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology program at a college, university, or technical institute; or be taking a pre-engineering course of study from a qualifying college under the Georgia Board of Regents' Engineering Transfer Program (RETP). (* Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.)
  • Be 17 years of age or older.
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completed GDOT Internship/Co-op application form.
  • Furnish a current official transcript to GDOT before or upon offer of employment.
  • Complete and submit medical self-certification forms upon acceptance to internship employment.
  • Meet any additional requirements of the attending college's internship program.
  • For males 18-25 years of age, furnish proof of Selective Service registration.
  • Applicants for this job title must be eligible for full-time employment in the United States; sponsorships are not offered.
