SR 26/US 80 Project – Bull River & Lazaretto Creek Bridges

Georgia DOT is working on plans to relieve congestion, improve traffic conditions, and encourage transportation safety on the US 80 bridges and roadway between Tybee Island and the mainland. Between Talahi Island and Tybee Island, US 80 / SR 26 is a two-way, two-lane, rural highway with intermittent passing lanes; the roadway is the only connection between Tybee Island and the mainland. US 80 is designated as a hurricane evacuation route on the Georgia Hurricane Plan, as well as a future bikeway in the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Long Range Plan. Travel between Tybee Island and the mainland is currently limited on these bridges, and these limitations are a particular challenge during peak tourism season, and for special events and festivals held on the island throughout the year. Additionally, Lazaretto Creek Bridge is structurally deficient, and eligible for replacement.

Notice

  Public Meeting

Georgia DOT held a Public Meeting concerning the replacement of the U.S. 80 bridges at Lazaretto Creek and Bull River. The proposed project would replace the bridges at Lazaretto Creek and Bull River with a two-lane bridge that includes bike and pedestrian improvements. Additionally, it would improve the roadway from Johnny Mercer Boulevard to Old US 80 on Tybee Island with paved shoulders and turn lanes. These changes have been determined to accomplish the purpose of this project, which is to ensure the integrity of the US 80 bridges and improve travel between Savannah and Tybee Island.

US 80 Bridge Study

Download Project Overview Map: The proposed project would replace the bridges at Lazaretto Creek and Bull River with two-lane bridges which would include bike and pedestrian improvements. Additionally, it would widen the roadway from Johnny Mercer Boulevard to Old US 80 on Tybee Island for multimodal improvements and enhanced (paved) shoulders. No additional through lanes would be included. These changes have been determined to accomplish the purpose of this project: to improve travel between Savannah and Tybee Island and to ensure the integrity of the US 80 bridges.
