SR 26/US 80 Project – Bull River & Lazaretto Creek Bridges
Georgia DOT is working on plans to relieve congestion, improve traffic conditions, and encourage transportation safety on the US 80 bridges and roadway between Tybee Island and the mainland. Between Talahi Island and Tybee Island, US 80 / SR 26 is a two-way, two-lane, rural highway with intermittent passing lanes; the roadway is the only connection between Tybee Island and the mainland. US 80 is designated as a hurricane evacuation route on the Georgia Hurricane Plan, as well as a future bikeway in the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Long Range Plan. Travel between Tybee Island and the mainland is currently limited on these bridges, and these limitations are a particular challenge during peak tourism season, and for special events and festivals held on the island throughout the year. Additionally, Lazaretto Creek Bridge is structurally deficient, and eligible for replacement.
