SR 316 Corridor
Reconstruction Projects (Gwinnett to Clarke)

Georgia DOT has begun a series of reconstruction projects along SR 316 from SR 20 in Gwinnett County to SR 10 in Athens - Clarke County.  The need for these projects was based on the existing and future traffic congestion and historic crash rates along this corridor.  Once completed, the changes will upgrade sections of SR 316 to a freeway-style corridor, improve traffic conditions and reduce the volume of crashes.

Process Overview

Concept

Develop alternatives to address concerns or issues at an intersection or along a corridor and identify the most viable alternative based on engineering, environmental and cost constraints.

Design

Design engineered drawings based on viable alternative from Concept to set required area needed for property acquisition- Right of Way (ROW). Engineer collaborates with Environmental to avoid, minimize and mitigate impacts to natural and cultural resources adjacent to and within the project limits.

ROW

Acquisition of property and rights needed to implement viable alternative for Construction (CST) based on Design drawings.

CST

Construction of proposed viable alternative. Traffic shifts or detours might be warranted to build the project in a timely manner.

Collector-Distributor (CD) Roads

CD Roads provide lanes adjacent to the main freeway for entering and exiting and their primary focus is to move vehicle lane changing onto the CD and off the main freeway. This allows the main freeway to operate more efficiently and reduce the potential for side swipe collisions due to vehicles entering and exiting at multiple locations.
