I-85 Widening (I-985 to SR 53)

The I-85 Widening corridor improvements will provide relief to motorists in this heavily congested area by widening I-85 from two to three lanes in both directions from I-985 to SR 53. Additional work on the project includes replacing three overpass bridges along I-85.

 5 Things You Need to Know

  1. The first of the initial 11-large scale MMIP projects
  2. The project adds new lane miles on I-85 in metro Atlanta with new lanes built into the median
  3. No right-of-way will be acquired as part of the project. Additionally, no interchange work is proposed as part of the project.
  4. The bridges being replaced are more than 50 years old and the replacements will require temporary detours
  5. The project takes place in Gwinnett, Barrow, and Jackson Counties

 Project Status

Georgia DOT is advancing project developments, which will include preliminary engineering, environmental studies and traffic analysis. Opportunities for public participation will be provided during the project development phase in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Georgia DOT is has selected the Design-Build team (C.W. Matthews) that will design and construct the project using an accelerated process. Final design and construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2018 and complete in 2020

The project is part of Georgia DOT’s Major Mobility Investment Program, which currently includes an initial 11 large-scale projects that will build a better Georgia by enhancing mobility and safety, fueling economic growth, and improving Georgians’ quality of life.
