Akers Mill Ramp

Project Number: 0015051

This project introduces a new way to access the recently completed I-75/I-575 express lanes in Cobb County. A new reversible ramp with direct access to Akers Mill Road would be located between I-75 northbound and southbound, providing a direct connection to the managed lane system. The ramp would serve as an exit ramp in the morning (southbound flow) and would serve as an entrance ramp to the express lanes system in the evening (northbound flow).

 Project Highlights

  • The need to acquire additional ROW for the project is limited, but is anticipated to begin in June 2020.
  • Construction is proposed to begin in June 2021 and is planned to be open to traffic in 2023.
  • Project funding partners include:
    • Cobb County
    • Cumberland Community Improvement District (CCID)
    • Georgia DOT
    • State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA)
    • Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC)
    • US Department of Transportation (USDOT)
  • Approximate construction cost is $13.7 million.

The ramp, which becomes the last arterial access point before the managed lane system ends, would include safety gates on both ends to limit access for reversible direction of travel. I-75 southbound travel lanes would be reduced from 12-foot to 11-foot wide lanes in the area of the new access ramp. The I-75 express lane exit ramp that was constructed under the express lanes project would be extended to connect with this new reversible access ramp at Akers Mill Road. Four small areas of limited right-of-way (ROW) totaling approximately 2,050 square feet would be acquired along Akers Mill Road only for the installation of new directional signage for the proposed ramp. Construction will be staged allowing the corridor to remain open to traffic while the improvements are being made.
