I-16 at I-95 Improvement Projects

The 16@95 Improvement Projects will provide infrastructure enhancements to the I-16 at I-95 interchange and along the I-16 corridor, one of Georgia’s busiest freight corridors as well as the gateway to the growing port in Savannah. The projects are intended to ease congestion, decrease travel times, and increase safety and operational efficiencies for passenger and freight vehicles. The projects include:

  • I-16/I-95 Interchange Reconstruction
  • I-16 Widening from I-95 to I-516

 Project Status

Savannah Mobility Contractors, JV has been selected as the design-build developer for the projects. Georgia DOT has begun project implementation, which includes design, permitting, and construction. Construction is currently scheduled to start in Q4 2019 and open to traffic in 2022.

5 Things You Need to Know

  1. The projects will ease heavy traffic flow and enhance safety
  2. The projects are expected to result in a 32% reduction in delay on I-16 by 2030
  3. Construction of new turbine configured ramps, the first in the state of Georgia, and collector-distributor (CD) lanes
  4. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology will be installed to link to Georgia Navigator
  5. The improvement projects are two of the initial 11 large-scale MMIP projects

Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP)

The project is part of Georgia DOT’s Major Mobility Investment Program, which currently includes an initial 11 large-scale projects that will build a better Georgia by enhancing mobility and safety, fueling economic growth, and improving Georgians’ quality of life.
